The New Forest of the twenty-first century preserves a pastoral custom that was once ubiquitous in Britain and Europe – commoning. This ancient right – enshrined in medieval law – gives certain landowners and leaseholders legal entitlements over its unenclosed lands and permits the commoners’ cattle, ponies, donkeys, and pigs to roam freely across the heaths and woods, and through villages and on roads.
What is commoning? And, how has this medieval practice survived into modern times?
