To feed an insatiable appetite for play going in Early Modern London, theatres, like the Rose Playhouse and the Globe, presented a new play every few weeks and often performed five different plays in one week. There were no directors, few rehearsals and most actors would not have a copy of the play to work from, only their own lines and their cues. How did this work? Why was playgoing so appealing to the common masses and what can we learn from them. Actor Callum Coates has spent thirty years investigating early modern theatre practice and how Shakespeare can be enlivened for modern audiences by exploring it. Join him and Emma Bown from On Cue Theatre Company, who are at the festival to present The Life of Henry the Fift, for an engaging talk and discussion.
