Anne Applebaum, Jim Naughtie and Sarah Churchwell explore the enduring tensions at the heart of the American experiment, tracing the arc from the Revolution and the Constitution through the Civil War and Reconstruction to today’s challenges. With democratic institutions under strain and political divisions deepening, they consider how the founding ideals of 1776 continue to shape, and complicate, the present moment. At a time when history feels uncomfortably close, this session sets the stage for understanding how the past informs today’s political reality.
