In this second, thought-provoking instalment, the conversation turns to a question as old as the nation itself: who gets to be American? Building on the themes of Part 1, Anne Applebaum, Jim Naughtie and Sarah Churchwell examine how ideas of citizenship, identity and belonging have evolved – and been contested – from the era of independence through civil rights to today’s debates. From race and representation to national myth and cultural identity, they explore how the struggle to define ‘American’ remains central to the country’s story. As historic arguments resurface with renewed urgency, this session offers a powerful reflection on identity, inclusion and the unfinished business of the American Revolution.
