35. Beyond the Charmed Circle: Sexuality and Deviancy
Forum

125 years after the end of the “virtuous” Victorian era, conventional morality still decrees that normal sexuality is heterosexual, married, monogamous, procreative, coupled, in a relationship, between people of the same generation, at home, using bodies only and vanilla. But in an age when pornography is rampant and kink is readily available on any number of apps, who decides what is acceptable and what is taboo? In this lively talk, Doctors Janega and Lister dive into the surprising history behind our changing attitudes towards sexuality and strip away the social, political and religious pressures that shape our ideas of morality. With plenty of eye-opening insights, they show that “normal” is anything but fixed—and everyone is sort of doing everything the whole time anyway.
