Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, known by his stage name Bobi Wine, is a Ugandan politician, activist, singer, actor, businessman and philanthropist. Wine entered formal politics in 2017 when he won a parliamentary by-election. As an MP, he opposed constitutional changes, such as the removal of the presidential age limit, and he criticized a social media tax. In 2021 and 2026, Wine ran for president as the National Unity Platform (NUP) candidate but lost to the incumbent, President Yoweri Museveni, amid allegations of fraud and repression. Despite the loss, in 2021 Wine’s NUP party secured a significant number of parliamentary seats, becoming the second-largest party after the ruling party, the National Resistance Movement.
