Charles Saumarez Smith has been Director of the National Portrait Gallery and the National Gallery and was Secretary and Chief Executive of the Royal Academy of Arts from 2007 to 2018. He is the author of John Vanbrugh: The Drama of Architecture (Lund Humphries, 2025) and architecture critic for The Critic.
