Field Marshal The Lord David Richards GCB CBE DSO DL An Army commando and proud Gunner, David led operations in East Timor and Sierra Leone before commanding the NATO campaign in Afghanistan. In 2010 he became Chief of the Defence Staff, the professional head of Britain’s armed forces and their strategic commander as well as the Prime Minister’s military adviser and a member of the National Security Council. In 2011 he received the Churchillian Award for leadership. David retired in 2013. He was created Baron Richards of Herstmonceux and now sits in the House of Lords. He was promoted to Field Marshal in June 2025.
