Built by King Alfred in around 888 AD as a religious house, the Abbey grew in prosperity until its closure by order of Henry VIII in 1539. Get hands on with interactive activities including their ‘indoor archaeological dig’ and discover how stratigraphy is used to uncover the secrets of the past, as well as medieval tile making and writing your own Saxon runes.
